MEET HYPATIA SORUNKE
Sorunke (they/them) is a multimedia artist based in East Harlem, New York.
They combine their passions of storytelling and visual art through print/zinemaking, photography, and filmmaking.
Their work has been exhibited at galleries–the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center, Museum of Human Achievement, MASS Gallery–film festivals–Reeling: The Chicago LGBTQ+ International Film Festival, Reel Affirmations: Washington DC’s International Film Festival, The Women’s Film Festival, and Newark LGBTQ Film Festival–and with grassroots organizations–Brooklyn Poets, the Black Zine Fair, and more.
With a background in as a researcher looking at how to build stronger institutional support for marginalized communities, they have presented their findings at Harvard University, Portland University, The University of Texas at Austin and in Cambridge. They recently received an Independent Research Grant from Barnard, Columbia University’s Women’s College from 2023-2024, and did a write up titled: The Sport of Organizing the Black Action Heroine.
Graduating from the University of Texas at Austin, they received a Plan II Honors and African and African Diaspora Studies dual degree (m. Gov),
Their academic interests center preservation of cultural studies, radical community building, and global sustainability efforts.
